It was the documenta 6, which took place from June 24 to October 2, 1977.

It was also the first "media documenta."
German television broadcast different art videos that were a part of the exhibition.

In the program accompanying the documenta, artists painted works on sidewalks throughout the inner city.

Joseph Beuys organized the »Free International University for Creativity and Inner-Disciplinary Research«, Walter DeMarias's »Vertical Earth Kilometer« caused great discussion, and there were special presentations in Cinema Royal about the history of cinema.

On September 5th, the »Commando Siegfried Hausner« of the RAF (Red Army Faction, also known as the "Baader-Meinhof Gang") kidnaped Dr. Hanns-Martin Schleyer, president of the Employers and Industries Associations, and killed his driver and three policemen in Cologne.

West Germany was plunged into its biggest crisis since its inception.
In the following weeks, many people were questioned or arrested .
During the documenta 6, what came to be known as the "German Autumn" had begun.

The two films »Germany in Autumn« (Kluge) and »The Third Generation« (Fassbinder) were reactions to those events.
The word »sympathizer« took on a whole new meaning, laws banning any form of contact to RAF prisoners were introduced, and in Kassel Joseph Beuys presented his »Honey Pump at Workplace«.

We are preparing a theatre piece entitled »Don't Look Now« about the media documenta and the »German Autumn« for the Theatre Outlines part of the documenta X to be presented September 5, 6, and 7 in Kassel.

The purpose of our theatre piece, which we will construct from found materials, is to examine memory as both a private and a social experience.
